Employee engagement affects every aspect of a company. Motivated staff will do their job better, faster and feel happier in general. You need to get people to care about the company as much as you. That is the key to success.

Ensuring that the employees are invested should be a top priority for any HR department and C-level executive. Raising and measuring employee engagement, however, is not intuitive.

That’s why we’ve come up with these nine strategies. Use them and make your company a place where people love to go. 

1. Make a Plan to Boost Employee Engagement 

If you’re serious about motivating people, come up with a formula on how to do it. First, get your company leadership on board. If they can’t dedicate much time to the project, at least make the initiative known to them.

Then, form a team of people that will have employee engagement as their primary goal. Make sure to include people from all over the company. Every department should be represented by someone that understands the unique issues and strengths of that particular part of the business. Give them a budget as well. After all, they can’t make something out of nothing.

At the start of the project, the team needs to do some research. Create surveys to gauge how invested the staff is right now. Ask how people would improve the business. Your plan will be based on their answers.

With a clear plan and people to put it into action, you’re ready to make the business better.

2. Promote Engagement 

Telling employees to care more about the company won’t work. The attitude must be cultivated, and the only way that will happen is if the change comes from the top. Managers and supervisors must inspire their teams to be more involved.

The very first thing you should do is create a short training program for managers. Making people happy and engaged isn’t an exact science. Your company, however, surely has a few individuals that seem to brighten the room whenever they enter it. Use them as an example and do some courses on sensitivity, encouragement, and leadership.

Improving company-wide engagement doesn’t happen all at once. Employees are more receptive to their direct coworkers. Each manager should be responsible for motivating their team. 

3. Listen to the Employees 

If you are unsure how to get more people smiling around the office, the best course of action is to ask them. No one will know the pains and needs of the staff better than themselves. Boosting employee engagement means being more open to receiving advice.

Some people, however, may not feel comfortable voicing their concern. Create an employee feedback system that ensures anonymity. Make sure everyone knows who to contact for a report and encourage them to share their thoughts.

Improving things at the staff’s request will prove that the company cares about them and motivate them to do the same. 

4. Enrich the Company Culture 

Employee engagement should not be just a task that needs doing. Make it part of your company culture. Ensure that the focus on happiness and involvement is ingrained in everyone’s minds.

The company culture should be known by everyone working there. Live it in your meetings, training sessions, and watercooler talk.

Over time, company culture evolves, and you have to make sure that it goes in the right direction. With enough dedication from you and the employee engagement team, improvements will come fast. 

5. Recognize Employees' Merits   

You can’t expect the staff to be involved if they don’t feel satisfied with their jobs. One of the most basic things you need to do to keep them happy is to acknowledge their accomplishments. You don’t have to give people a raise every time they do a good job. It’s enough to frequently congratulate them and be friendly to boost morale.

Make sure that the business records the efforts of each employee and treats them accordingly. Such a tool is useful for employee engagement as well as efficiency.

If the company recognizes the worth of each employee, they will be motivated to do more.

6. Create Team Spirit 

The success of projects and the business as a whole depends on the collaboration of the staff. You need to promote unity and teamwork. Consider some team building exercises to raise morale and create strong bonds.

Every project manager should keep these tips in mind:

  • Make sure that everyone is working towards the same goal.
  • Ask for honesty. Without it, there will be no trust.
  • Ask for ideas and feedback. The staff will be more engaged if their opinion matters.
  • Keep everyone motivated. Your team is your biggest asset. Make sure they’re as invested as you.
  • Act like a leader. When all’s said and done, you have to make the biggest decisions. Be ready for them.

When every member of the team is on the same page, things get done efficiently.

7. Create a Pleasant Work Environment 

When trying to raise employee engagement, you also have to take into account the surroundings. Think about the atmosphere as well as the workplace.

One of the things on your “To Do” list should be to make the environment nicer. Maybe you can get the staff comfortable chairs or just make the place look beautiful. While not immediately observable, it has a significant impact on productivity.

More importantly, though, is how the employees themselves interact.

Make sure that everyone is getting along. Consider adding some company policies or organize seminars to facilitate communication and cooperation.

Home will always be where the heart is but you can still make the workplace a close second. 

8. Be a Leader, Not a Boss 

Very many companies face a problem with internal engagement because of the way managers interact with employees. If you want to motivate people, you can’t just hand out tasks and be done with it. Every manager and C-level executive should try to lead by example.

That is not always possible, but employees can tell when their boss isn’t invested in the job. As a result, the staff won’t be either.

Make sure that leaders stay connected to their teams and help whenever they can. An amicable relationship and fair treatment will go a long way.

9. Promote Communication 

We’ve talked about how the staff wants their voice to be heard. One of the things you need to think about is the means by which they will do it.

Poor communication between team members and especially employees leads to shoddy work. When people can’t do their jobs properly, they tend to lose motivation and stop caring.

Employees need to have the contact information of their direct superior. On a company-wide scale, executives need a way of reaching everyone for projects and the general well-being of the business.
